The Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, in consultation with the Union Territory of Ladakh administration, has formally identified 28 geographical places and features in Ladakh with standardized names on the official Survey of India map. This naming initiative, part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav commemorations, aims to facilitate accurate recognition and enhance public awareness of Ladakh's geographical features.

The 28 identified features include 10 peaks (Atisha Giri, Kanishka Peak, Martand Giri, Zorawar Peak, Rinchen Zangpo, Sakyasri Giri, Marpa Lotsava Ri, Milarepa Kangri, Shiva Ri, Maheshvara Ri), 8 land areas (Brangsa, Kuksel, Dehra Compass, Gogra, Kumarayana Point, Panglung, Shamal Lungpa), 3 glaciers (Parpik, Skamri Glacier), 2 passes (Chapchingal Pass, Shachmirk Pass), and one each of valley (Shkorga Valley), lake (Guru Rinpoche), river (Yangpa River), water body (Hot Spring), and mountain (Karun Pir, Drak Karpo, Jolmori).

The updated official map of Ladakh incorporating these newly standardized names is available for public viewing on the Survey of India website at https://surveyofindia.gov.in/pages/state-maps. The announcement was made through Press Information Bureau on October 2, 2026, with release ID 2318027.
