9th Rashtriya Poshan Maah Launch and Focus
The Government of India is launching the 9th Rashtriya Poshan Maah (National Nutrition Month) on September 9, 2026, at the Rudraksh International Cooperation and Convention Centre in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. This year's campaign centers on the theme "Hamari Anganwadi Hamari Jimmedari," emphasizing community ownership of Anganwadi centers, which represent the world's largest childcare network. The month-long observance aims to reinforce key nutrition, health, and caregiving behaviors among pregnant women, lactating mothers, children, adolescents, and their families, with particular focus on promoting balanced, protein-rich nutrition.
Nutrition Infrastructure and Reach
India's nutrition infrastructure comprises nearly 13.99 lakh Anganwadi Centers staffed by 13.30 lakh Anganwadi workers, forming a vast grassroots network that reaches approximately 8.94 crore beneficiaries. Children aged 6 months to 6 years account for over 7.2 crore of all beneficiaries, highlighting the program's emphasis on early childhood nutrition and development. Additionally, pregnant women and lactating mothers together number nearly 1.1 crore, reflecting sustained attention to maternal health during the critical first 1,000 days of life.
Program Framework and Historical Context
The campaign operates under Mission Poshan 2.0, India's unified National Nutrition Mission anchored by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, which was introduced in the Union Budget 2021–22. This framework consolidates three core schemes: POSHAN Abhiyaan (technology-driven monitoring and behavioral change), Anganwadi Services/Integrated Child Development Services (supplementary nutrition and early childhood care), and Scheme for Adolescent Girls (nutritional support for out-of-school girls). The Rashtriya Poshan Maah serves as an annual platform to spread awareness of Mission POSHAN 2.0 objectives, building on previous campaigns that have strengthened awareness around maternal nutrition, infant feeding practices, growth monitoring, and hygiene.
Five Thematic Priorities for 2026
The 2026 campaign is anchored in five mutually reinforcing priorities: promotion of dietary diversity with focus on adequate protein intake and local foods; ensuring fresh, diverse Hot Cooked Meals through menu rotation and quality assurance; strengthening community ownership through newly constituted Anganwadi Management Committees (guidelines issued June 23, 2026) and SNP Menu Boards; promoting cognitive development and nutrition as fundamental to Early Childhood Care and Education; and commemorating 10 years of Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana, India's flagship maternity benefit program.
Specific Activities and Implementation
Activities include healthy recipe demonstrations using locally available ingredients, Poshan Melas showcasing nutritious foods, protein-rich food campaigns, showcasing produce from Poshan Vatikas, weekly menu rotation at Anganwadi Centers, live meal demonstrations, nationwide food quality testing in collaboration with FSSAI, community tasting sessions, activation of Anganwadi Management Committees, display of SNP Menu Boards, community monitoring of meal quality, rollout of revised Home Visit Scheduler with 34 developmental milestones, referral pathways for children with developmental delays, 100% saturation drives for PMMVY enrollment, citizen awareness campaigns, and launch of PMMVY toolkit for states.
Digital Monitoring and Previous Campaigns
The Poshan Tracker, launched on March 1, 2021, serves as the primary digital governance tool for monitoring infrastructure and service delivery in near real-time, tracking Anganwadi Centre operations, daily attendance, ECCE activities, and growth monitoring for pregnant women, lactating mothers, children up to 6 years, and adolescent girls. The 8th Rashtriya Poshan Maah in 2025 focused on promoting nutrition literacy and healthy lifestyles, with 14.33 crore activities conducted nationwide in convergence with over 20 ministries, while the Poshan Pakhwada in April 2026 focused on maximizing brain development in the first six years of life.
