The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has released new operational guidelines for the Anemia Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, replacing the previous 6X6X6 strategy with an expanded 7X7X7 framework. The program was unveiled during the 16th Central Council of Health and Family Welfare meeting on June 29, 2026.
The 7X7X7 framework comprises seven beneficiary groups: children 6-59 months, children 5-9 years, adolescents 10-19 years, pregnant women, lactating mothers, women in reproductive age (20-49 years), and 0-6 months LBW babies. Seven interventions include prophylactic IFA supplementation, testing of anemia, therapeutic management of anemia, deworming and delayed cord clamping, Jan Bhagidari communication strategy, addressing non-nutritional causes of anemia, and promotion of locally available iron-rich food through diet diversification.
Seven institutional mechanisms support implementation: intra-ministerial coordination, National Centre of Excellence and Advanced Research on Anemia, National AMB Abhiyaan Unit, strengthening supply chain and logistics, convergence with other ministries, Anemia Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan Portal, and digital framework for monitoring through T4 approach.
The program shifts from the T3 approach (Test, Treat, Talk) to a T4 approach (Test, Treat, Talk and Track) using digital invasive hemoglobinometers for saturation of Hb testing across platforms. Beneficiaries are tracked through existing digital systems: pregnant and lactating mothers through JANANI Portal, school-going children through RBSK portal, and children for vaccination through U-WIN portal. The strategy includes categorization of anemia into mild, moderate and severe levels with appropriate case-based management protocols.
Key components emphasize dietary diversification with Eat Right Approach, promotion of locally available iron-rich foods, implementation of convergent 'whole of Government Approach' with inter-ministerial convergence, and Jan Bhagidari communication strategy to transform mindset from passive acceptance of anemia to active ownership. Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Smt. Anupriya Patel provided this information in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on August 11, 2026.
