Digital India Infrastructure and Connectivity Achievements
The Government of India has reported significant progress in digital infrastructure development under the Digital India programme launched in July 2015. Total telephone connections grew from 93.3 crores in March 2014 to 133+ crores in March 2026, while internet subscribers jumped from 25.15 crore to 109.27 crore during the same period. The BharatNet project has made 2.21 lakh Gram Panchayats service-ready as of June 2026, with Point of Presence operational at 80,472 GPs. Additionally, 24,784 towers have been commissioned under the Digital Bharat Nidhi funded mobile scheme as of 30.06.2026.
Digital Public Infrastructure and Services
Data costs have plummeted from Rs. 269 per GB in 2014 to approximately Rs. 8-10 per GB in 2025-26. Aadhaar has generated over 1.44+ billion numbers, enabling Direct Benefit Transfers of over Rs. 52 lakh crore across 318 schemes of 56 Ministries. Unified Payments Interface serves 55.49 crore individuals, 6.5 crore merchants, and connects 731 banks, processing 85% of India's digital payments and nearly 50% of global real-time digital payments. DigiLocker has 71.66 crore registered users with 936.03 crore documents issued by 2,822 issuers, while UMANG offers 2,575 services. e-Sanjeevani has served over 48 crore patients, and 5.01 lakh Common Services Centres are functional nationwide, with 3.91 lakh at the Gram Panchayat level.
Digital Skills and IT Industry Impact
Pradhan Mantri Gramin Digital Saksharta Abhiyan has trained over 6.39 crore persons against a target of 6 crore. FutureSkills Prime, a collaboration with NASSCOM, has registered more than 34+ lakh candidates with 23+ lakh trained in various courses. The IT and ITeS industry generated USD 283 billion in revenue in FY25, while India's 2,100+ Global Capability Centres employ around 26 lakh professionals. The government has established 73 Software Technology Parks of India centres, with 65 located in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, and the GENESIS scheme aims to scale about 1,600 technology startups through 65 incubation centres.
Cyber Security and Data Protection Framework
Multiple agencies coordinate cyber security: National Cyber Security Coordinator ensures inter-agency coordination; CERT-In serves as the national response agency; National Cyber Coordination Centre scans cyberspace and shares metadata; Cyber Swachhta Kendra provides botnet cleaning and malware analysis; Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre deals with cybercrimes; and National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre protects critical infrastructure. The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 establishes a comprehensive framework for processing digital personal data, requiring lawful purpose processing based on consent or legitimate uses. The Digital Personal Data Protection Rules, 2025 notified on 13th November 2025 provide an eighteen-month transition period for implementation, including establishment of the Data Protection Board.
IndiaAI Mission and Funding
The government approved the IndiaAI Mission on 7th March 2024 with a total outlay of Rs. 10,371.92 crore over five years, operationalized through seven pillars: IndiaAI Compute for high-end AI computing ecosystem; Foundation Models for indigenous LLMs and multimodal models; IndiaAI Application Development Initiative for socio-economic solutions; IndiaAI FutureSkills for talent pipeline; AIKosh for unified dataset platform; Safe & Trusted AI for governance frameworks; and IndiaAI Startup Financing for risk capital throughout the startup lifecycle.
