Government Women Empowerment Program Achievements Report

This PIB backgrounder documents the comprehensive achievements of various government initiatives aimed at women's empowerment across health, education, financial inclusion, and economic participation sectors as of August 2026.

Health and Maternal Care Outcomes

The Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme has contributed to improving child sex ratio to 1,020 females per 1,000 males in NFHS-5 (2019-21) from 943 in Census 2011. Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana has enrolled 5.13 crore beneficiaries with ₹20,571 crore disbursed to 4.37 crore women as of July 31, 2026. Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan has conducted over 7.50 crore pregnant women examinations with 22,000+ facilities offering services nationwide. Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram assisted over 1.99 crore pregnant women and 16.85 lakh sick infants in FY 2024-25. Health outcomes show significant improvement: first-trimester antenatal visits increased from 58.6% in NFHS-4 to 76.2% in NFHS-6, while institutional births rose from 78.9% to 90.6% nationally.

Education and Skills Development

India's school education system serves 24.72 crore students with 11.96 crore female enrolment in 2025-26. Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas increased enrolment from 6.07 lakh (2020-21) to 7.58 lakh (2025-26). Higher education female enrolment reached 2.18 crore in 2022-23, an increase of 60.32 lakh from 1.57 crore in 2014-15. The Vigyan Jyoti Scheme has benefitted over 1.12 lakh girls across 300 districts since December 2019. Women's participation in IITs/NITs increased from below 10% to over 20% through supernumerary seats, and women constituted over 53% of UGC NET-JRF scholars in STEM subjects in 2024-25. Skill development programs show PMKVY trained 19.85 lakh candidates in 1.0, 1.10 crore in 2.0, 7.37 lakh in 3.0, and over 28 lakh in 4.0 with nearly 45% women beneficiaries.

Financial Inclusion and Economic Empowerment

Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana has accumulated deposits exceeding ₹3.33 lakh crore as of December 2025 with 8.2% tax-free annual interest. The SHG ecosystem covers 7,627 blocks with 1.51 crore community cadre members and has accessed bank credit over ₹12.18 lakh crore through 50,548+ trained Bank Sakhis as of February 6, 2026. The Lakhpati Didi Scheme operates across 34 States/UTs covering 757 districts with 94.31 lakh SHGs and 10.14 crore members as of March 31, 2026. Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana has opened 58.90 crore accounts with 32.68 crore belonging to women as of July 1, 2026. Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana sanctioned 57.79 crore loans amounting to ₹40.07 lakh crore disbursement as of April 8, 2026, with two-thirds going to women entrepreneurs. PM SVANidhi benefits 78.24 lakh vendors with 46% women beneficiaries. NaMo Drone Didi Yojana has distributed 1,094 drones to women SHGs with a ₹1,261 crore outlay targeting 15,000 drones.

Healthcare Infrastructure and Nutrition

Ayushman Bharat has created 45.5 crore Ayushman cards with 22.48 crore issued to women and over 5.25 crore hospital admissions for women. Over 1.86 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs are functional offering maternal and preventive healthcare. The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission has linked over 110 crore health records with women holding 49.72% of ABHA accounts. Mission Saksham Anganwadi serves over 8.94 crore beneficiaries including 64.46 lakh pregnant women, 45.44 lakh lactating mothers, and 15.68 lakh adolescent girls as of July 31, 2026, with 1.29 lakh Anganwadi Centres upgraded to Saksham Anganwadis. Mission Indradhanush has registered 11.87 crore children and 3.96 crore pregnant women on the U-WIN portal, vaccinated 5.46 crore children and 1.32 crore pregnant women, and screened 8.73 crore women for cervical cancer. The HPV vaccination campaign launched on February 28, 2026, has vaccinated 52,10,302 girls out of 1.2 crore eligible beneficiaries aged 14 years.

Representation and Safety Initiatives

Women account for 47.15 crore of the 96.88 crore people on the final electoral roll as of February 8, 2026. Nearly 46% of Panchayati Raj representatives (14.5 lakh) are women. The Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, 2023 provides 33% reservation for women in legislative bodies. In defense, 17 women cadets graduated from NDA in 2025 with 158 women cadets joining since 2022. Mission Shakti operates 15.2 lakh One Stop Centres and 642 Nari Adalat nationwide, with Women Helpline (181) supporting over 1.05 crore women. Under housing schemes, PMAY-Gramin allotted 24.73% houses (96.06 lakh) to women while PMAY-U 2.0 allotted 1 crore houses to women. On GeM platform, women-led enterprises secured 13.7 lakh orders worth ₹28,000 crore+ in FY 2025-26, capturing 5.6% of order value.
