The High-Level Committee on Demographic Changes called upon Union Home Minister Amit Shah at his residence in New Delhi for a courtesy meeting. The committee informed the Home Minister about its strategy to visit various states and union territories to collect first-hand ground-level details from state governments and UT administrations. Additionally, the committee plans to interact with various ministries of the central government to receive feedback on subjects related to demographic changes.

The committee has prepared a detailed questionnaire to gather relevant information from states and UTs in advance, aiming to make their visits more meaningful and interactive. Union Home Minister Amit Shah appreciated the committee's strategy and directed the Home Secretary to provide all possible assistance to the committee in its day-to-day working and during their visits. Shah also suggested that the committee provide its recommendations at the earliest.

The High-Level Committee was constituted by the Government of India following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's announcement of a "High-powered Demography Mission" on 15 August 2025. The committee's mandate is to study demographic changes arising from illegal immigration and other abnormal reasons, and to suggest measures to deal with these demographic changes.

The committee is chaired by Justice Prakash Prabhakar Navlekar (Retired) and includes as members the Census Commissioner along with three distinguished persons: Shri Durga Shankar Mishra (Retired IAS), Shri Balaji Srivastava (Retired IPS), and Dr. Shamika Ravi (member of PMEAC). The committee will scientifically assess demographic changes occurring in various parts of the country, analyze their causes, and recommend appropriate policy, legislative, and administrative measures.
