The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare has achieved a significant milestone by creating 11 crore Farmer IDs by October 23, 2026, five months ahead of the March 31, 2027 deadline set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This achievement under the Digital Agriculture Mission represents a major step in digital transformation for Indian agriculture, providing farmers with unique digital identities that enable transparent, efficient, and timely access to government schemes, bank credit, crop insurance, and disaster relief while significantly reducing paperwork and repeated verification requirements.

The Farmer ID system is designed to streamline agricultural service delivery by eliminating the need for farmers to repeatedly visit government offices and banks or submit the same documents for different schemes. Specific benefits include easier access to bank loans and Kisan Credit Cards with reduced document verification, more transparent compensation assessment and disbursement under Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana during natural disasters, faster disaster relief assistance delivery, and improved Minimum Support Price procurement processes that eliminate intermediaries to ensure farmers receive full value for their produce.

The Digital Agriculture Mission, approved by the Union Cabinet on September 2, 2024, has already demonstrated tangible results with over 6 crore farmers across the country receiving direct benefits through the Farmer ID-based service delivery system. The verified farmer database has helped eliminate fraud and duplicate verification while improving coordination among government departments and strengthening policy formulation and scheme monitoring. The achievement represents a strong example of cooperative federalism, with Central and state governments, Union Territory administrations, district-level teams, and field personnel working in coordination to implement the system. States and Union Territories are taking specific steps to bring tenant farmers and actual cultivators onto the digital platform to ensure no eligible farmer is excluded from government welfare programs.
