India has achieved near-universal banking coverage with 99.92% of inhabited villages (600,868 out of 601,328) now served by a banking outlet within a 5 km radius, as per data uploaded by banks on the Jan Dhan Darshak App. This expansion is supported by a robust infrastructure comprising over 1.81 lakh bank branches, 17.36 lakh Business Correspondents (BCs), and 1.65 lakh India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) centers as of July 17, 2026.

The government's endeavor to provide banking accessibility in rural and remote areas is facilitated by RBI regulations permitting commercial banks, small finance banks, payments banks, local area banks, and regional rural banks to open branches anywhere in India without prior approval, provided 25% are in unbanked rural areas. The State Level Bankers' Committee and Union Territory Level Bankers Committee continuously oversee the rollout of banking outlets in uncovered areas through consultation with state/UT governments, member banks, and stakeholders.

As of July 17, 2026, there are 58.77 crore Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) accounts in the country with a total balance of ₹3,12,414 crore. The government has implemented several digital initiatives to ensure transparency and timely disbursement of agricultural credit, including the Jan Samarth Portal as a one-stop digital platform for government-sponsored loans and subsidies, e-KYC applications by NABARD, KRISHIKA by the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, and the Kisan Rin Portal launched in September 2023 for Aadhaar-based beneficiary verification and digital claim settlements under the Modified Interest Subvention Scheme.

For cybersecurity enhancement, the government and RBI have established India Digital Payment Intelligence Corporation (IDPIC) to share real-time fraud intelligence using AI, machine learning, and big data analytics. RBI has issued Master Directions on Digital Payment Security Controls in February 2021 mandating common security standards for payment channels, launched the AI-based 'MuleHunter' tool for identifying money mules, and conducts e-BAAT awareness programs. The Ministry of Home Affairs' Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) analyzes digital lending apps and operates the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (www.cybercrime.gov.in) and helpline number 1930 for cyber incident reporting.
