India e-Courts Project Implementation and e-Filing Statistics
The Ministry of Law and Justice provided an update on the e-Courts Mission Mode Project, which is being implemented in a phased manner across India with the objective of strengthening Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the judicial system. The project has implemented various ICT-enabled initiatives including Case Information System (CIS) 4.0, e-Filing, e Payments, Video Conferencing, Virtual Courts, Digital Case Records, National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG), Interoperable Criminal Justice System (ICJS), eSewa Kendras, National Service and Tracking of Electronic Processes (NSTEP), and the eCourts Services Portal and Mobile App.
As of June 30, 2026, the e-Filing system rules have been implemented in 25 High Courts and their respective District Courts. A total of 1.25 crore cases have been filed through the e-Filing system across the country. The data shows significant variation in adoption across states, with Bombay recording the highest number at 34,76,271 cases (4,40,054 in High Court and 30,36,217 in District Courts), followed by Madras with 27,81,135 cases (1,69,247 in High Court and 26,11,888 in District Courts), and Delhi with 19,12,282 cases (all in District Courts as they use their own eFiling application for High Court).
In Uttarakhand specifically, a total of 1,17,924 cases have been filed through the e-Filing system, with 356 cases filed before the High Court of Uttarakhand and 1,17,568 cases in District Courts. The district-wise breakdown shows Haridwar district leading with 19,195 cases filed at the Haridwar Chief Judicial Magistrate court, followed by Dehradun with 9,221 cases at the Chief Judicial Magistrate FTC court, and Udham Singh Nagar with various courts totaling significant filings.
To promote adoption, the eCommittee of the Supreme Court of India, in coordination with High Courts, has undertaken training programs, capacity-building workshops, and orientation sessions for Judicial Officers, court staff, advocates, and other stakeholders through State Judicial Academies. User manuals, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), FAQs, and video tutorials have been prepared and disseminated to facilitate effective use of the e-Filing system. Additionally, eSewa Kendras have been established across the country to assist litigants and advocates with registration on the e-Filing portal, scanning and uploading of petitions and supporting documents, online payment of court fees, and other e-Filing related services.
