India has endorsed the Call to Action for 6G Leadership and Security, joining 24 like-minded governments including Canada, Costa Rica, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Honduras, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Norway, Paraguay, Republic of Korea, Romania, Sweden, United Kingdom, and United States. The endorsement was announced on September 9, 2026, on the sidelines of the G20 Innovation Ministerial held in North Carolina, United States on September 1-2, 2026 under the US G20 Presidency.
The initiative commits participating governments to shaping sixth-generation wireless communications based on principles of openness, interoperability, security, resilience, resource efficiency, and innovation-led competition. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will coordinate India's engagement and follow-up activities with government agencies, industry, academia, and other stakeholders.
The Call to Action establishes a graduated timeline for implementation: within one month, governments must identify expert 6G points of contact, designate responsible agencies, and prepare preliminary stakeholder lists; within three months, engage telecommunications sector to map the emerging 6G landscape and identify barriers to leadership; within six months, strategize on supporting secure, resilient, sustainable 6G supply chains; and within twelve months, convene in person in 2027 to review progress and set priorities.
Cooperation avenues include coordination on 6G research and development, collaboration among trade and development finance agencies for secure technology deployment, assessment of cybersecurity risks, supply chain transparency, realization of 5G system potential, and working with industry to shape global 6G standards with strong security standards. The initiative expressly states that participation does not bind any government's authority to pursue independent positions in standards bodies and cautions against duplicating existing technical work in industry-led standardization forums.
India's participation builds on domestic foundations including the Bharat 6G Vision, Bharat 6G Alliance, and indigenous 4G and 5G technology stack. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, India aims to contribute 10% of global 6G standards and patents, supporting the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat 2047. The engagement complements India's ongoing work in international standardization and spectrum forums while maintaining independent positions.
