India Financial Inclusion Progress Report 2026

India has made significant progress in financial inclusion, with the RBI's Financial Inclusion Index increasing from 43.4 in March 2017 to 70.0 in March 2026, reflecting broad-based improvements across access, usage, and quality dimensions. According to World Bank Global Findex 2025, account ownership has reached 89% since 2011, indicating substantial gains in formal financial services access.

Banking Infrastructure and Access

The banking network comprises over 1.81 lakh bank branches as of 17 July 2026, with 99.92% of villages covered by banking outlets within a 5 km radius. India Post Payments Bank strengthens last-mile connectivity through 1.65 lakh post offices serving over 11 crore customers across 5.57 lakh villages and towns. Business Correspondents extend doorstep banking with over 17.36 lakh BCs nationwide.

Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana (PMJDY)

Launched in 2014, PMJDY provides basic savings bank accounts without minimum balance requirements, offering access to savings, remittances, credit, insurance, pension, and Direct Benefit Transfer. Account holders receive RuPay Debit Cards and accident insurance cover of ₹2 lakh (accounts opened after 28 August 2018) or ₹1 lakh (accounts opened before that date), with overdraft facility up to ₹10,000 for eligible holders.

JAM Trinity and Direct Benefit Transfer

The JAM Trinity integrates Jan Dhan accounts, Aadhaar, and mobile connectivity, enabling efficient Direct Benefit Transfer. As of 10 August 2026, DBT has transferred ₹52,89,019 crore across 320 schemes involving 56 ministries, reducing leakages and eliminating fake beneficiaries.

Social Security Schemes

Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) provides ₹2 lakh life cover for individuals aged 18-50 years at an annual premium of ₹436, with 27.78 crore gross enrolments as of 30 June 2026. The scheme has received 11,31,505 claims and disbursed 10,97,751 claims. Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) offers ₹2 lakh cover for accidental death/full disability and ₹1 lakh for partial disability at ₹20 annual premium, with 58.66 crore enrolments, 2,56,526 claims received, and 1,89,057 claims disbursed. Atal Pension Yojana (APY) serves 9.29 crore subscribers with gender distribution: 4.72 crore males (50.8%), 4.56 crore females (49.16%), and 26,599 transgender (0.028%), providing guaranteed monthly pension from ₹1,000 to ₹5,000.

Credit Inclusion Programs

PM Mudra Yojana has sanctioned 57.79 crore loans totaling ₹40.07 lakh crore to non-corporate, non-farm micro and small enterprises. PM SVANidhi has benefited over 75.5 lakh street vendors with over 1.12 crore loans disbursed worth more than ₹17,800 crore. Kisan Credit Card serves 763.6 lakh applications through commercial banks, 368.6 lakh through rural banks, and 1242.0 lakh through cooperative banks as of 10 August 2026. Jan Samarth platform has received 54.10 lakh applications worth ₹3,00,951 crore across 16 credit schemes and 300+ lenders.

Digital Payments and UPI

UPI has become the backbone of India's digital payments, with transaction volume increasing 12,000-fold and value 4,000-fold between FY2016-17 and FY2025-26. In July 2026, UPI processed 2,365.8 crore transactions worth ₹29,87,880.49 crore with 741 live banks, recognized by IMF as the world's largest real-time payment system.

Financial Literacy Initiatives

National Centre for Financial Education conducted 31,082 workshops benefiting 10,68,571 people (35% male, 65% female) as of 10 August 2026. Financial Education Programme for Adults covered 6,48,512 beneficiaries through 19,266 workshops. The Nationwide Financial Inclusion Saturation Campaign organized 2.67 lakh camps, completing 5.19 crore KYC re-verifications, 1.20 crore nomination updates, and settling 92,066 PMJJBY/PMSBY claims, while opening 1.11 crore PMJDY accounts, 1.40 crore PMJJBY enrolments, 2.86 crore PMSBY enrolments, and 44.43 lakh APY enrolments as of 31 October 2025.
