Committee constituted to study demographic changes arising from illegal immigration and other abnormal reasons
Justice Prakash Prabhakar Navlekar (Retired) appointed as Chairman of the Committee
Committee members include: Census Commissioner, Shri Durga Shankar Mishra (Retired IAS), Shri Balaji Srivastava (Retired IPS), and Dr. Shamika Ravi
Joint Secretary (Foreigners-I), Ministry of Home Affairs, will be the Member Secretary of the Committee
Committee given one year timeline to submit report
Tenure may be extended by up to six months if necessary
Committee will conduct comprehensive assessment of demographic changes across India
Will analyze patterns of abnormal population changes at level of religious and social communities
Will identify causes including cross-border activities, illegal immigration, economic opportunities, and socio-environmental factors
Will recommend policy, legislative, and administrative measures
Will propose permanent operational mechanism for identification, detention, and deportation of illegal immigrants
Will recommend institutional mechanism to strengthen border management and population stabilization
Will propose comprehensive policy framework for Central-State Government coordination on illegal immigration
Demographic change described as serious problem linked to sovereignty, national security, law and order, social structure changes, and protection of tribal societies
