India's Infrastructure Transformation Drives Significant Travel Time Reductions
This PIB backgrounder documents how India's infrastructure development is dramatically reducing travel times across the country through bridges, tunnels, expressways, and modern rail services. The report measures connectivity improvements in hours saved rather than kilometers built, highlighting how new infrastructure is making distance less of a constraint on mobility.
Bridges: Major Time Savings on River Crossings
Several key bridges have transformed regional connectivity. The Bhupen Hazarika Setu (Dhola–Sadiya Bridge) between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh reduced travel time between Rupai and Meka/Roing from 6 hours to 1 hour, saving 5 hours. The Bogibeel Bridge in Assam turned a day-long journey between Dhemaji and Dibrugarh into a 1-2 hour trip. Atal Setu in Maharashtra cut the Mumbai-Navi Mumbai journey from 2 hours to 20 minutes, while the Kosi Rail Mahasetu in Bihar reduced the rail journey between Nirmali and Saraigarh from 8 hours to 30 minutes, also cutting distance from 300 km to 22 km. The Sisseri River Bridge in Arunachal Pradesh saved approximately 5 hours between Pasighat and Roing.
Tunnels: Overcoming Difficult Terrain
Tunnels through challenging terrain have achieved substantial time savings. The Atal Tunnel in Himachal Pradesh saves 4-5 hours by bypassing Rohtang Pass and reducing the Manali–Sarchu distance by 46 km. The Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Tunnel in Jammu & Kashmir saves nearly 2 hours between Jammu and Srinagar while cutting distance by 30 km. The Banihal–Qazigund Road Tunnel, also in Jammu & Kashmir, saves approximately 1.5 hours with a 16 km distance reduction. The Sela Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh cuts travel time by over 1 hour at 13,000 feet altitude.
Expressways & Economic Corridors: Revolutionizing Road Travel
Expressways have dramatically compressed inter-city travel times. The Delhi–Meerut Expressway reduced travel from 2.5 hours to 50 minutes over 82 km. The Bengaluru–Mysuru Expressway cut travel from 3 hours to 75 minutes over 118 km. The Delhi–Dehradun Economic Corridor reduced travel from over 6 hours to 2.5 hours over 213 km. The Mumbai–Nagpur Samruddhi Mahamarg substantially reduced travel from 16 hours to approximately 8 hours over 701 km. The Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway reduced Ahmedabad-Dholera travel from 2 hours 15 minutes to 45 minutes (100 km to 83 km) and Ahmedabad-Bhavnagar from 3 hours 15 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes (169 km to 141 km). The Delhi–Amritsar–Katra Expressway will reduce Delhi–Amritsar travel from 8 to 4 hours and Delhi–Katra from 14 to 6 hours. The Delhi–Mumbai Expressway will reduce travel from 33 hours to approximately 12 hours.
Railways: Accelerated Services and High-Speed Corridors
The 2026 railway timetable reflects significant improvements with 549 trains speeded up across the network. Specifically, 20 trains became faster by 60 minutes or more, 48 trains gained 31–59 minutes, 105 trains gained 16–30 minutes, and 376 trains were speeded up by 5–15 minutes.
Vande Bharat Express services have achieved remarkable time savings: the New Delhi–Varanasi service is 40–50% faster than earlier services; Katra–Srinagar saves 2–3 hours; Banaras–Khajuraho saves approximately 2 hours 40 minutes; Ernakulam–Bengaluru saves over 2 hours (8 hours 40 minutes journey time); Lucknow–Saharanpur saves nearly 1 hour (7 hours 45 minutes journey time). The Vande Bharat Sleeper between Howrah–Guwahati reduces travel from approximately 17 to 14 hours with 16 air-conditioned coaches for around 823 passengers.
The Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor will reduce travel from 8–9 hours by road to approximately 1 hour 58 minutes at 320 kmph operational speed, serving 12 stations and including India's first 7 km undersea rail tunnel beneath Thane Creek, targeting first service for August 2027.
Seven new high-speed rail corridors announced in the Union Budget 2026–27 span nearly 4,000 km with an estimated investment of ₹16 lakh crore. These include: Delhi–Varanasi (~3 hours 50 minutes), Varanasi–Patna–Siliguri (~2 hours 55 minutes), Chennai–Bengaluru (~1 hour 13 minutes), Bengaluru–Hyderabad (~2 hours), Chennai–Hyderabad (~2 hours 55 minutes), Mumbai–Pune (~48 minutes), and Pune–Hyderabad (~1 hour 55 minutes).
