India Consumer Price Index June 2026 Release

The Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation released the provisional Consumer Price Index (CPI) data for June 2026 with base year 2024=100. The headline retail inflation rate stood at 4.38% year-on-year, representing an increase from the final May 2026 figure of 3.93%.

Key Inflation Metrics

The combined CPI index reached 107.00 in June 2026, with rural areas recording higher inflation at 4.74% (index 107.24) compared to urban areas at 3.92% (index 106.69). Food inflation, as measured by the Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI), accelerated to 5.32% from 4.78% in May, with rural food inflation at 5.45% and urban at 5.09%. The CFPI index stood at 107.15 combined (106.82 rural, 107.72 urban). Housing inflation was recorded at 2.10% nationally, with rural housing inflation at 2.66% and urban at 1.90%.

Division-Wise Inflation Breakdown

The data reveals significant variation across consumption categories. Personal care, social protection and miscellaneous goods recorded the highest inflation at 16.72%, followed by restaurants and accommodation services at 6.91%. Food and beverages inflation stood at 5.05%, while transport inflation was 4.31%. The lowest inflation was observed in information and communication at 0.43%.

Top Inflation Drivers

The top five items with highest inflation at All India combined level were: Silver Jewellery (133.21%), Ginger (50.41%), Gold/Diamond/Platinum Jewellery (36.82%), Tomato (31.92%), and Raisin (kishmish) and monacca (20.52%). The top five items with lowest inflation (deflation) were: Potato (-20.34%), Peas (-9.67%), Motor car and jeep (-6.89%), Cumin(Jeera) (-3.75%), and Motor cycle and scooter (-3.49%).

State-Level Performance

Among states with population over 50 lakh, Telangana recorded the highest combined inflation at 6.36%, followed by Andhra Pradesh at 5.39%, Puducherry at 5.39%, Tamil Nadu at 5.24%, and Odisha at 5.15%. The lowest inflation was recorded in Mizoram at 1.63%.

Methodology and Data Quality

The data collection achieved a 100% response rate from both rural and urban markets, covering 1,407 urban markets (including online markets) and 1,465 villages across all States/UTs through personal visits by field staff. The reference period for price reporting for petrol, diesel and LPG prices was the 15th of the corresponding month. The next CPI release for July 2026 is scheduled for August 12, 2026.

Historical Context

The provisional June 2026 CPI of 107.00 represents an increase from 105.91 in May 2026 and 102.51 in June 2025. The year-on-year inflation trajectory shows a steady increase from 2.74% in January 2026 to the current 4.38% in June 2026.
