India Wholesale Price Index June 2026 Provisional Estimates

The Ministry of Commerce & Industry released provisional estimates of the Wholesale Price Index (Base Year 2022-23) for June 2026, showing continued inflationary pressures in the Indian economy. The All India Wholesale Price Index inflation reached 9.87% on a year-on-year basis, up from 9.68% in May 2026. The index for All Commodities stood at 110.2 in June compared to 109.9 in the previous month.

Major Group Performance

The inflation trajectory across major groups showed mixed trends. Primary Articles inflation increased significantly to 7.0% in June from 4.99% in May, with its index rising to 116.1 from 113.7. Fuel and Power inflation moderated slightly to 27.41% from 30.33%, though it remained the highest among all groups, with its index at 111.1 compared to 113.0 in May. Manufactured Products inflation remained unchanged at 7.48%, with the index stable at 107.8.

Key Inflation Drivers

Specific sectors emerged as major contributors to wholesale inflation. Mineral Oils (containing Petroleum Products), Food Articles, Manufacture of Basic Metals, and Manufacture of Chemicals and Chemical Products were identified as the primary drivers of WPI inflation in June 2026. The Food Index, which combines Food Articles from Primary Articles and Manufacture of Food Products from Manufactured Products with a weight of 24.99%, observed YoY inflation of 6.14% in June compared to 4.49% in May.

Data Revisions and Methodology

The final index for April 2026 was revised upward from 108.8 to 108.9, corresponding to a revised WPI inflation of 8.36% from the provisional estimate of 8.26%. The final estimate for April was compiled with a weighted response rate of 97.5%, while the provisional estimate for June was compiled with a weighted response rate of 82.6%. The release follows the standard schedule where provisional indices are released on the 14th of the following month, with the next release for July 2026 scheduled for August 14, 2026.

Cumulative Performance Analysis

The cumulative WPI for All Commodities from April to June 2026 stood at 109.7, compared to 100.3 for the same period in both 2025 and 2024, and 98.6 in 2023. The cumulative YoY inflation rate for April-June 2026 reached 9.37%, significantly higher than 0% in the same period last year and 1.72% in 2024. Sector-wise cumulative data shows Fuel and Power with the highest cumulative inflation at 27.51%, followed by Manufactured Products at 7.18% and Primary Articles at 5.35% for the April-June 2026 period.

Additional Index Measurements

The document also includes provisional estimates for Output Producer Price Index (OPPI) and trial Input Producer Price Index (IPPI). The Output PPI for All Commodities stood at 109.9 in June compared to 109.6 in May. For the manufacturing sector, the trial Input PPI reached 107.1 in June, up from 104.9 in May, with the final estimate for April revised to 104.2 from the provisional 104.9.
