Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya launched the Extramural Research Grant Policy of the National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL) on November 3, 2026, during the 10th World Association of Anti-Doping Scientists (WAADS) Quality Assurance Managers' Meeting in New Delhi. The policy aims to promote research and development in advanced detection and prevention methods to strengthen the scientific foundation of India's anti-doping efforts. Dr. Mandaviya reiterated India's zero tolerance policy for doping, emphasizing that victories must be earned through talent, discipline, and hard work.
The Minister highlighted India's sporting achievements under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, noting that sports has become an important pillar of nation-building. India finished fourth in the medal tally at the 2026 Asian Games, while para-athletes secured a record 114 medals at the Asian Para Games 2026. Initiatives such as Khelo India, Fit India, and the Target Olympic Podium Scheme have strengthened the sporting ecosystem and created opportunities for youth.
With India set to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030 and aspiring to host the 2036 Olympics, the approach combines stronger testing infrastructure with education, awareness, and prevention. Athletes, coaches, and medical professionals must understand the implications of prohibited substances, risks associated with supplements, and responsibilities under anti-doping rules. The two-day meeting was attended by Secretary (Sports) Shri Hari Ranjan Rao, international delegates including Dr. Osquel Barroso (Senior Associate Director, WADA), Dr. Dorota Kwiatkowska (President, WAADS), Prof. (Dr.) P. L. Sahu (Director, NDTL), and other eminent scientists.
