The Central Government is closely monitoring the situation arising from flash floods in Nepal that are expected to impact Indian border states. Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with the Chief Ministers of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh regarding the disaster and expressed condolences for the loss of life in Nepal, stating that the Government of India stands with Nepal in this crisis.
According to the Central Water Commission advisory and media reports, a sudden rise in river water level occurred in the Trishuli river at Furke Khola in Nepal, approximately 160 km from the Indian border, due to suspected flash flood/GLOF (Glacial Lake Outburst Flood) activity near the Nepal-China border. The flood impact is expected to travel downstream into the Gandak river in India.
State governments of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh have implemented measures including required evacuation and other support to local Indian communities near the India-Nepal border. Both states have been advised to remain alert and maintain close monitoring of the situation. In border areas likely to be affected, local administration and rescue teams along with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been placed on high alert.
Multiple ministries including Home Affairs, External Affairs, Jal Shakti, and Defence are continuously monitoring the situation. The Central Water Commission reports that water levels on the Nepal side reservoirs are reducing and the situation is under control, with no panic-like situation having arisen.
There are reports of missing Indian tourists in Nepalese territory, and the Ministry of External Affairs/Indian Embassy in Kathmandu has issued emergency contact numbers (+977 985 131 6807 and +977 970 910 7500) for assistance and information regarding Indian nationals affected by the flash floods in Nepal.
