India-New Zealand Strategic Partnership and Bilateral Agreements
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the elevation of India-New Zealand relations to a Strategic Partnership during his address at the Gala Lunch in Auckland. This marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to New Zealand in forty years and represents a new chapter in bilateral relations, built on democratic values and unprecedented momentum in recent years.
The two countries concluded a Free Trade Agreement in record time, which is expected to open new opportunities for industries, farmers, and youth of both nations. Bilateral trade has grown by more than 50% over the past three years, and the leaders expressed confidence that the FTA will provide a strong foundation for doubling trade over the next five years. New Zealand committed to investing US$20 billion in India, providing its companies with long-term partnership opportunities in India's growth story.
Sectoral Cooperation Framework
In FinTech, both nations are working towards connecting India's UPI with New Zealand's payment systems. In agriculture, dairy, and food processing, a strong roadmap for cooperation has been developed to benefit farmers and livestock owners. The healthcare cooperation will see enhanced role of traditional medicines, recognizing both countries' rich traditions in this area.
Defence and security cooperation reflects deep strategic trust, with the Defence Cooperation Agreement signed last year creating a strong framework. The leaders agreed on a framework for maritime cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, including bilateral naval exercises, logistics support, and cooperation in hydrography to strengthen coordination and interoperability.
People-to-People and Cultural Exchanges
The Cultural Cooperation MoU signed will momentum to exchanges in art, culture, heritage, and creative industries. New Zealand has been an important destination for Indian students, and India invited New Zealand universities to open campuses in India. The countries are celebrating the centenary of sporting relations, with several events planned in both countries, including enhanced cooperation in cricket and other sports through a Sports Joint Action Plan.
Global Cooperation and Security
On the global stage, India and New Zealand are working as trusted partners for reforms in global institutions including the United Nations. A Joint Working Group on terrorism has been established to combat terrorism together. The cooperation is deemed essential for peace, stability, and security in the Indo-Pacific region.
