India's GDP Performance Q1 FY27
India's economy began 2026-27 with robust growth, recording 7.8% real GDP growth in the first quarter, exceeding the Reserve Bank of India's estimate of 7.0% and marking the highest Q1 growth during the four-year period from 2023-24 to 2026-27. Real GDP at Constant Prices was estimated at ₹81.36 lakh crore in Q1 FY27, compared to 6.9% growth in Q1 FY26. Nominal GDP at Current Prices reached ₹88.27 lakh crore, recording 10.3% growth compared to 8.1% last year. Real GVA grew 8.2% to ₹73.82 lakh crore, while nominal GVA increased 11.5% to ₹80.53 lakh crore.
Growth Drivers and Sectoral Performance
The growth was supported by strong domestic demand and gains in manufacturing and services. Gross Fixed Capital Formation (investment) rose significantly by 11.9% compared to 5.8% in Q1 FY26. Private Final Consumption Expenditure (household spending) grew 7.1%, up from 6.8% last year. Exports expanded by 12.0%, accelerating from 6.0% in the previous year.
On the production side, the tertiary sector grew by 10.0% in Q1 FY27, up from 8.0% in Q1 FY26, with financial, real estate, IT and professional services recording 12.1% growth. The secondary sector expanded by 8.6% compared to 6.1% in the corresponding quarter, with manufacturing growing 9.2%. Specific manufacturing categories showed exceptional performance: electrical equipment production surged 27.0% (from 9.7%), other transport equipment grew 19.5% (from 3.8%), and computer/electronic products increased 12.4% (from 8.8%). Capital goods production rose 15.2% compared to 8.8% a year earlier.
Recent Economic Indicators
The momentum continued into July 2026, with industrial production growing 6.7% compared to 5.4% last year. For April-July 2026-27, industrial production increased 6.3% compared to 4.0% in the same period last year. Capital goods production rose 16.1% in July 2026, intermediate goods increased 10.0%, and infrastructure/construction goods grew 6.9%. The Index of Core Industries recorded 5.4% year-on-year growth in July 2026 and grew 4.3% during April-July, up from 1.5% in the corresponding period.
Export performance remained strong with combined merchandise and services exports reaching US$80.14 billion in July 2026, increasing 13.31% year-on-year. Cumulative exports for April-July 2026-27 were estimated at US$316.42 billion, 13.16% higher than the US$279.63 billion recorded in the same period last year.
Credit expansion accelerated across sectors: agriculture credit grew 17.0% year-on-year in July 2026 (from 7.3%), industry credit increased 20.0% (from 6.5%), and services sector credit grew 22.9% (from 10.2%).
Policy Support Measures
Multiple policy measures were implemented to support growth across sectors. In manufacturing, the Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme (₹62,500 crore through 2030-31), Semicon 2.0 (₹1,27,500 crore), and BHAVYA Rasayan Scheme (₹3,030 crore for chemical parks) were approved. ECLGS 5.0 targets additional credit flow of ₹2.55 lakh crore with guarantee coverage for MSMEs and non-MSMEs.
Energy security measures include Samudra Manthan (₹84,084 crore for offshore exploration), Coal Gasification Scheme (₹37,500 crore), GOBARdhan (₹23,731 crore for bioenergy), and PM-Surya Sarovar Yojana (₹5,070 crore for floating solar).
Trade and investment initiatives include the India-UK CETA agreement, India-Israel Bilateral Investment Agreement, FPI participation reforms in government securities, and Bharat Maritime Insurance Pool (₹12,980 crore sovereign guarantee).
Agriculture support includes PM-KISAN continuation (₹3.15 lakh crore for FY27-FY31), increased MSPs for 14 Kharif crops, Mission for Cotton Productivity (₹5,659.22 crore), and National Investment Policy for Urea-2026.
International Recognition
The International Monetary Fund described India as one of the world's fastest-growing economies and a key engine of global growth in July 2026. S&P Global Ratings affirmed India's 'BBB/A-2' sovereign ratings with a Stable Outlook in August 2026, following an upgrade to 'BBB' in 2025 after an 18-year gap.
Revised Historical Estimates
Real GDP growth estimates were revised upwards for previous years: 2023-24 from 7.2% to 7.3%, 2024-25 from 7.1% to 7.2%, and 2025-26 from 7.7% to 7.8%, reflecting the use of new price and production indices with base year 2022-23.
