On World Elephant Day 2026, India's Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change reaffirmed the country's commitment to elephant conservation through official statements from Union Minister Shri Bhupender Yadav and Union MoS Shri Kirti Vardhan Singh.
Minister Yadav emphasized that India has established 33 Elephant Reserves across 14 States and identified 150 scientifically validated elephant corridors. He noted that advanced population monitoring and stronger measures to mitigate human-elephant conflict are strengthening conservation efforts. Yadav stated that securing the future of elephants means securing India's forests, biodiversity and ecological heritage, calling for action to ensure elephants continue to roam freely through India's forests for generations to come.
Minister Singh highlighted that India is home to nearly 60% of the world's wild Asian elephants, making them a living symbol of the country's ecological heritage. He described elephants as ecosystem engineers that disperse seeds across long distances, giving rise to new plants and helping maintain ecological balance. Singh attributed India's elephant reserves as a testament to the country's conservation commitment under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership and called for united action to protect these gentle giants.
The statements were made through social media posts on August 12, 2026, as part of World Elephant Day commemorations, emphasizing the ecological significance of elephants and India's role as a primary habitat for Asian elephants.
