The Ministry of Defence has detailed preparations for India's 80th Independence Day celebrations at Red Fort on August 15, 2026. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the grand event commemorating '150 Years of Vande Mataram' and 'Yuva Shakti for Viksit Bharat@2047', marking the first time the national song will be rendered during the celebrations.
Upon arrival, the Prime Minister will be received by Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh, Raksha Rajya Mantri Sanjay Seth, and Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. He will inspect a Guard of Honour consisting of one officer and 24 personnel each from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Delhi Police, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Arjun Singh. The Army contingent is led by Major Aditya Sharma, Naval by Lieutenant Commander Neelam Rana, Air Force by Squadron Leader Vipin Kumar, and Delhi Police by Additional DCP Vineet Kumar.
Captain Sonia Singh Chauhan will assist the Prime Minister in hoisting the National Flag, synchronized with a 21-Gun Salute by the 1721 Field Battery using indigenous 105mm Light Field Guns, commanded by Major Pawan Singh Shekhawat. A National Flag Guard comprising one officer and 32 Other Ranks from each service will present the Rashtriya Salute, commanded by Major Lokendra Singh Shekhawat.
Two Mi-17 helicopters piloted by Wing Commander Rajat and Squadron Leader Ankit Varshney will shower flower petals after the flag hoisting. Approximately 2,500 NCC cadets and 'My Bharat' volunteers will form 'Vande Mataram' and sing the national song and anthem.
Around 5,000 special guests have been invited, including beneficiaries from various government schemes such as PM Mudra Yojana, PM SVANidhi, PMAY(U), PM Kaushal Vikas Yojana, and PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, among others. Over 1,500 people in traditional attire from various states/UTs will also attend.
Public convenience measures include 25 cloak rooms at six locations, 200 volunteers (100 NCC and 100 MY Bharat) at help desks, wheelchair assistance at metro stations, free metro services from 4 AM for invitees, parking at Parade Ground, improved ramps and stairs, traffic restrictions on Google & Mappls Maps, and rain ponchos for all invitees due to unpredictable weather.
Seating enclosures are named after major Indian lakes including Badkhal, Bhimtal, Chandratal, Chilika, and others, continuing the theme from Republic Day 2026 which used river names. A post-event Swachhata Campaign involving NCC cadets and MY Bharat volunteers will ensure prompt garbage removal, and drainage systems have been thoroughly cleaned to prevent water overflow during potential rainfall.
Pre-event competitions included essay and painting contests on AI's role in Viksit Bharat and India 1947 vs 2047, plus online quizzes on constitutional rights, women freedom fighters, space technology, and nuclear achievements. Approximately 600 competition winners will attend the celebrations.
Nationwide band performances will occur at 343 locations by bands from Army, Navy, Air Force, Indian Coast Guard, NCC, and various paramilitary forces, with public entry allowed. The Indian Navy and local administration will conduct flag hoisting in Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep.
