The Indian government provided an update on its human spaceflight program through a parliamentary response. The Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS) is planned as India's first indigenous space station comprising five modules, with a target establishment date of 2035. In October 2024, the Union Cabinet approved the development and launch of the first module (BAS-01) by 2028 as part of a revised scope for the Gaganyaan Programme.
Significant progress has been made on BAS-01, with completion of the Baseline Design Review and System Engineering, resulting in the release of 31 baseline design documents. An expert committee review has also been completed, and design of subsystems has commenced.
The Gaganyaan program has seen substantial advancements including new developments in Human Rated Launch Vehicle (HLVM3), Orbital Module, Crew Escape System, ground infrastructure establishments, flight operations and communication network, and crew recovery operations. Precursor missions TV-D1, IADT-01 and IADT-02 have been successfully accomplished, with activities in advanced stages for the first uncrewed mission, G1.
Critical docking systems have been developed including electrical and mechanical interfaces, and the concept demo model of refueling mechanism has been successfully demonstrated. For current Gaganyaan missions, certain critical technologies including flight suit, view port, and crew seat have been sourced from external parties.
The government has approved indigenous development of major critical technologies for human space program requirements, including flight suit, view port, crew seat, and docking technology. Design and development of proto hardware is currently in progress. These initiatives are expected to establish the technological foundation for indigenous design and development of the remaining four modules of BAS, building self-reliance in critical human spaceflight technologies and fostering innovation and high-technology manufacturing capabilities.
