Mission LiFE Progress Report

Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), launched in October 2022, is a mass movement promoting environmentally friendly lifestyles through seven key themes: Save Energy, Save Water, Reduce Waste, Reduce E-Waste, Say No to Single Use Plastic, Adopt Healthy Lifestyles, and Adopt Sustainable Food Systems. The movement has achieved significant nationwide participation with over 272 crore saplings planted under the "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" initiative and more than 7.3 crore people participating in over 40 lakh LiFE events across India. Maharashtra State alone recorded 31,49,967 participants in more than 2 lakh LiFE awareness and action events.

Digital Infrastructure and Awareness Programs

The Ministry has launched two dedicated digital platforms: the Mission LiFE Portal serving as a knowledge repository and the Meri LiFE Portal for structured reporting and monitoring of LiFE events. Additionally, over 12 lakh Eco-Clubs are operational among children and youth in schools, while EIACP Centres conduct awareness and capacity-building programs on Mission LiFE themes. Nationwide campaigns include One Nation One Mission: End Plastic Pollution, Harith Yoga, Swachhata Hi Seva, World Environment Day campaigns, Ideas4LiFE, and e-waste awareness drives through MyGov and MYBharat portals.

International Recognition and Policy Integration

Mission LiFE has gained substantial global recognition, with India's resolution on "Promoting Sustainable Lifestyles" adopted unanimously at the Sixth Session of UNEA-6 in Nairobi on 1 March 2024, co-sponsored by Sri Lanka and Bolivia. At COP15 to the Ramsar Convention in Zimbabwe on 30 July 2025, India's resolution on "Promoting Sustainable Lifestyles for the Wise Use of Wetlands" was adopted. India was elected to the Board of the 10-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns (10YFP) for consecutive terms (2024–26 and 2026–28) and currently serves as Co-Chair. LiFE has been included as a qualitative goal under India's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement and recognized in the Sharm-El-Sheikh Implementation Plan (COP27) and G20 New Delhi Leaders' Declaration.

Climate Achievement Metrics

India has demonstrated significant progress toward its NDCs, with the emissions intensity of GDP declining by 37.38% in 2022 compared to 2005, as reported in India's First Biennial Transparency Report to the UNFCCC. Forest and tree cover created an additional carbon sink of 2.44 billion tonnes of CO₂ equivalent between 2005 and 2022. Notably, India achieved over 50% of its cumulative installed electric power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources, five years ahead of the 2030 target.

Supporting Initiatives and Future Vision

Flagship initiatives supporting India's climate goals include PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, National Green Hydrogen Mission, National Nuclear Mission, and Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) Programme. Financial mechanisms such as Sovereign Green Bonds and the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme have been introduced to mobilize climate finance and accelerate low-carbon development. Climate resilience is being strengthened through the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) and State Action Plans on Climate Change (SAPCCs). These initiatives collectively promote clean growth, energy security, industrial competitiveness, and climate resilience, supporting India's transition to a developed nation aligned with the Viksit Bharat @2047 vision and commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070.
