India's Economic Growth and Global Engagement Highlights by Commerce Minister
Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Shri Piyush Goyal, addressing the Leadership Dialogue at the 13th PAFI Annual Forum 2026 in New Delhi, emphasized India's expanding global economic engagement and efforts to strengthen participation in global value chains and supply chains. He stated that India is negotiating trade and economic partnerships from the position of an economy expected to grow into a $30 trillion economy, with current nominal GDP at $4 trillion and purchasing power parity GDP at approximately $20 trillion, ranking third globally. The gap between these measures is anticipated to narrow as India progresses towards its economic vision.
India's semiconductor consumption demand is projected to exceed $150 billion annually within the next five years, highlighting the need to develop capabilities across the AI ecosystem, including large language models and agentic models. Additionally, India has emerged as the world's third-largest startup ecosystem, with more than 120 unicorns, a significant increase from the 400–500 startups at the launch of the Startup India initiative. The focus is now on innovation and promoting Indian startups in the deep-tech ecosystem, with India also becoming the third country to have a rocket launched into space by the private sector.
Ongoing trade negotiations include engagements with Canada, Chile, Peru, the Southern African Customs Union (SACU), Mexico, Maldives, Eurasia, Central Asia, Russia, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), and Israel, aimed at expanding opportunities for India to participate in global value chains and facilitate the seamless flow of goods, services, tourists, educational institutions, and sports. The Minister expressed confidence in India's young population, which is increasingly informed about global developments and opportunities, to make informed choices about their future.
