India's Wind Power Capacity and Generation Update
India's installed wind power capacity reached 57,443 megawatts (MW) as of June 30, 2026, according to data submitted by the Union Minister of State for Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, Shri Shripad Yesso Naik in a written reply to the Lok Sabha. The power generation from wind energy projects during FY 2025-26 was 106 billion units, showing significant growth from previous years.
State-wise Capacity and Generation Breakdown
Gujarat leads the states with the highest installed wind capacity at 16,086 MW, followed by Tamil Nadu (12,273 MW), Karnataka (8,896 MW), Maharashtra (6,318 MW), Rajasthan (5,516 MW), and Andhra Pradesh (4,461 MW). Other states with notable capacity include Madhya Pradesh (3,686 MW), Telangana (128 MW), Kerala (71 MW), and others (4 MW).
In terms of power generation during FY 2025-26, Gujarat also led with 33,706 million units (MUs), followed by Tamil Nadu (24,200 MUs), Karnataka (18,804 MUs), Andhra Pradesh (8,902 MUs), Maharashtra (8,610 MUs), Rajasthan (7,345 MUs), Madhya Pradesh (4,706 MUs), Telangana (292 MUs), and Kerala (130 MUs), totaling 106,699 MUs for the fiscal year.
Growth Trends and Global Ranking
The data shows consistent growth in both capacity addition and power generation over the past three financial years. Capacity addition increased from 3,253 MW in 2023-24 to 4,151 MW in 2024-25, and further to 6,057 MW in 2025-26. Similarly, power generation remained at 83 billion units in both 2023-24 and 2024-25 before jumping to 106 billion units in 2025-26. According to the GWEC Report 2026, India ranked 4th position globally in wind energy installation as of December 31, 2025.
Government Initiatives for Renewable Energy Development
The government has implemented multiple initiatives to promote renewable energy including wind energy. These include the Green Energy Corridor Scheme for funding new transmission lines and sub-station capacity for renewable power evacuation. Inter State Transmission System (ISTS) charges have been waived for inter-state sale of solar and wind power for projects commissioned by June 30, 2025, with graded charges thereafter.
Additional measures include preparation of transmission infrastructure plans until 2030, permitting 100% Foreign Direct Investment under automatic route, and notifying Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) followed by Renewable Consumption Obligation (RCO) trajectory until 2029-30, with penalties for non-compliance. The RCO includes specified quantum of consumption from Decentralized Renewable Energy sources.
Other key initiatives include revised Standard Bidding Guidelines for tariff-based competitive bidding, Viability Gap Funding Scheme for Offshore Wind Energy Projects, Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Rules 2020 for net-metering, National Repowering and Life Extension Policy for Wind Power Projects 2023, Offshore Wind Energy Lease Rules 2023, Revised Guidelines for installation of prototype wind turbine models (June 12, 2025), Mechanism of Approved List of Models and Manufacturers for Wind Turbines, Electricity (Late Payment Surcharge) Rules, Green Energy Open Access Rules 2022 allowing access for consumers with 100 kW or above demand, Green Term Ahead Market (GTAM) for renewable energy sales through exchanges, and orders requiring power dispatch against Letter of Credit or advance payment to ensure timely payment to RE generators.
