The Indian Parliamentary Delegation, led by Shri Harivansh, Hon'ble Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha, completed its participation in the 153rd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly held in Arusha, Tanzania from October 5 to 9, 2026. On the final day of the assembly, October 9, 2026, the delegation attended the meeting of the Governing Council of the IPU, which addressed remaining agenda items including the election of the IPU President and reports of specialized meetings.
Shri Harivansh, along with Shri Anurag Singh Thakur (MP, Lok Sabha) and Smt. Kamaljeet Sehrawat (MP, Lok Sabha), cast the three votes allocated to India in the IPU President election conducted by secret ballot. The incumbent IPU President declared Mr. Milton Dick, Speaker of the House of Representatives of Australia, as the newly elected President of the IPU. Following the announcement, the Indian delegation personally congratulated Mr. Dick and wished him success in his tenure.
Dr. Sasmit Patra, MP from Rajya Sabha, presented a congratulatory letter from the Hon'ble Speaker of Lok Sabha to Mr. Milton Dick. The assembly subsequently adopted the Arusha Communiqué and two resolutions: one from the Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights titled "Inclusive social development for all: Parliamentary strategies to promote the rights and empowerment of persons with disabilities," and another emergency resolution on "Urgent parliamentary action to address climate-related disasters and strengthen resilience in the Himalayan region and other vulnerable regions."
The assembly was declared closed by H.E. Mussa Azzan Zungu, Speaker of the National Assembly of Tanzania and President of the Assembly. The Indian delegation's participation was described as eventful and effective, contributing to the resolutions and outcomes of the IPU Assembly.
