Indian Railways has approved a ₹140 crore project for the installation of Kavach Version 4.0, an indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, on the Ahmedabad Division of Western Railway in Gujarat. The project covers 598 route kilometers spanning 48 block sections and will be implemented under the umbrella programme for provision of Kavach with LTE-based communication backbone on balance routes of Indian Railways.

This new approval complements the previously sanctioned Kavach work on approximately 702 route kilometers in the same division, meaning the entire Ahmedabad Division will now be covered by the safety system. The Kavach system is designed to enhance operational safety by preventing Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD), automatically applying brakes when required to avert unsafe situations, controlling train speed in critical conditions, and significantly reducing the risk of collisions.

Indian Railways is progressively expanding Kavach across its network as part of its continued efforts to strengthen safety and modernize train operations. The project approval was announced as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations and represents a significant step toward enhancing rail safety infrastructure in the country.
