Indian Railways has approved the construction of a four-lane Road Over Bridge (ROB) at Alkapuri in the Vadodara Division of Western Railway at a total project cost of ₹166.5 crore. The funding will be equally shared between Indian Railways and the State Government of Gujarat, with each contributing approximately ₹83.2769 crore.
The project addresses significant infrastructure limitations of the existing Alkapuri Road Under Bridge (RUB) near Vadodara Railway Station, which currently has a vertical clearance of only about 3.0 metres. This inadequate clearance restricts movement of larger vehicles and causes recurring waterlogging during monsoon seasons, leading to traffic congestion, operational difficulties, and inconvenience for road users.
Traffic assessment data indicates peak-hour traffic exceeding 1,600 Passenger Car Units (PCU) per hour, with multiple traffic conflict points and inadequate pedestrian facilities. The new four-lane grade-separated road facility will augment the capacity and functionality of the existing road crossing arrangement without disturbing railway operations.
The ROB will provide improved connectivity to key transport facilities including Vadodara Railway Station, GSRTC Bus Station, and the upcoming High-Speed Rail (Bullet Train) Station. The project will strengthen connectivity around Vadodara Railway Station while providing a more effective crossing arrangement and addressing the functional limitations of the existing Alkapuri RUB to meet present and projected traffic requirements of the area.
