The Ministry of Railways has announced a green initiative to transport fly ash through the railway network, following a review meeting chaired by Union Minister for Railways Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw. The meeting, attended by Union Ministers of State for Railways Shri V. Somanna and Shri Ravneet Singh Bittu, focused on creating a dedicated logistics network for large-scale transportation of fly ash from thermal power plants to various industries.
Approximately 340 million tonnes of fly ash is generated annually from thermal power plants across India. The initiative aims to transform this waste material into valuable raw material for infrastructure development, including road construction, brick manufacturing, cement production, and other construction applications. The railway network will utilize specialized containers and dedicated rail corridors to ensure clean and efficient transportation.
The program represents a circular economy model where waste material is converted into productive resources, potentially leading to more affordable construction materials including cheaper bricks and lower cement prices. This initiative is expected to support infrastructure development across both urban and rural India while addressing the environmental challenge of fly ash disposal from thermal power plants.
