The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, through the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), has developed significant river-based tourism infrastructure in Andhra Pradesh. IWAI has constructed a Roll on-Roll off (Ro-Ro) terminal at Muktyala on National Waterway-4 (Krishna river) to facilitate Ro-Ro movement, supporting tourism, pilgrimage and local livelihoods.
During 2024, IWAI constructed and handed over four floating jetties to the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) to facilitate tourism activities. Additional works have been awarded for the construction of a Ro-Ro terminal at Harishchandrapuram in Andhra Pradesh and for the supply and installation of three floating steel pontoons to promote tourism activities in the Telangana region of Krishna river (NW-4).
IWAI has also entrusted the work of updating the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the development of NW-4, which covers Godavari river regions near Dharmapuri and adjoining areas. This DPR update aims to outline the contours of development for inland water transport facilities with targeted completion by March 2027. Further course of action will be determined based on the outcome and recommendations of the DPR.
