The Ministry of Jal Shakti reported that 75% of rural habitations across India have been covered with Sujal Gaon IDs under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) digital monitoring framework. As of August 10, 2026, out of 16,96,213 total habitations in the country, Sujal Gaon IDs have been issued to 12,67,808 habitations.
The Sujal Gaon ID is a unique identification number assigned under JJM 2.0's digital monitoring framework for water supply service areas that meet prescribed standards and criteria. The ID is issued through the national JJM digital platform, with details communicated to respective States/UTs through the JJM digital ecosystem. The objective is to facilitate systematic identification, monitoring, reporting, tracking, and verification of water supply service areas achieving desired outcomes in rural drinking water service delivery and sustainability.
Concurrently, Sujalam Bharat has been developed as a federated Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) under JJM for lifecycle-based and service-oriented management of Rural Piped Water Supply Schemes (RPWSS). This infrastructure integrates digital asset registries, geospatial mapping, and decision-support systems to provide unified visibility of water supply infrastructure. Integrated with the PM GatiShakti platform, it provides a GIS-validated architecture and assigns unique digital identities to rural water supply schemes through Sujalam Bharat IDs.
The integration of Sujal Gaon IDs and Sujalam Bharat IDs with GIS and structured hydraulic linkages enables end-to-end source-to-tap mapping, asset tracking, and lifecycle management. This digital framework facilitates better planning, monitoring, and accountability of existing schemes, helps identify gaps and duplication, and enables data-driven decision-making and effective Operation and Maintenance (O&M). The system strengthens transparency and oversight while helping reduce irregularities in JJM implementation.
