The Ministry of Jal Shakti is hosting the first Departmental Summit on September 1-2, 2026 at Sushma Swaraj Bhawan, New Delhi, as part of the Prime Minister's vision for cooperative federalism and Water Secure India initiative. This summit represents an innovative platform to strengthen Centre-State collaboration and collective ownership of national priorities through joint deliberations between political leadership and senior officials from Union and State Governments.
The two-day summit will focus on four key thematic pillars: timely implementation of water infrastructure projects; Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari-Catch the Rain program; source sustainability of drinking water systems; and operation and maintenance of rural drinking water supply schemes under Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0. Discussions will cover specific implementation areas including project execution, inter-agency coordination, water conservation measures, rainwater harvesting techniques, groundwater recharge initiatives, digital monitoring systems, asset management protocols, and strengthening community-led water governance structures.
The consultations are expected to produce concrete, time-bound outcomes including accelerated completion of ongoing water projects, enhanced public participation in water conservation efforts, strengthened sustainability of drinking water sources, and improved accountability mechanisms for reliable rural drinking water services. Participating states will share their experiences, challenges, and best practices during the deliberations, with the goal of reaching consensus on agreed outcomes that reinforce cooperative federalism principles.
During the valedictory session, participating states will present the key outcomes and action plans emerging from the deliberations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Prime Minister's guidance is expected to strengthen the collective resolve of Centre and State governments and provide implementation momentum for the agreed action points toward achieving water security and developed India vision by 2047.
