Maharashtra PMMSY Fisheries Scheme Implementation Review

The Department of Fisheries, Government of India regularly monitors the implementation of Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) projects across all States and Union Territories, including Maharashtra, through physical meetings, virtual meetings, field visits, and digital monitoring via a dedicated centralized platform.

Under PMMSY for the period 2020-21 to 2026-27, the central government has approved fisheries development proposals worth ₹1,601.44 crore submitted by the Government of Maharashtra, with a central share of ₹593.33 crore. Of this approved amount, ₹419.02 crore in central funds has been released to Maharashtra, and the state government has utilized ₹408.77 crore of the released funds.

The approved projects encompass various fisheries activities aimed at enhancing fish production and productivity, strengthening infrastructure facilities, developing cold chain and marketing capabilities, ensuring resource sustainability, and promoting fishermen safety and welfare. Beneficiary selection and project implementation are carried out by the respective State Governments and Union Territories.

According to the Government of Maharashtra, 3,714 beneficiary-oriented projects are currently active under PMMSY in the state, with 2,856 projects (77%) already 100% completed. These projects have generated direct employment for 15,763 persons and indirect employment opportunities for 19,528 persons. Upon completion of all approved projects, the ongoing initiatives are expected to create additional employment opportunities and further strengthen the socio-economic status of the fisheries sector in Maharashtra.

Infrastructure Projects Implemented

The district-wise details of important fisheries infrastructure projects implemented under PMMSY in Maharashtra include:

  • 6 Fish Landing Centres (FLCs): Located in Sindhudurg (Tara-Mumbri FLC), Ratnagiri (Palashet FLC and Dabhol FLC), Raigad (Korlai FLC and Revdanda FLC), and Sindhudurg (Shiroda FLC)
  • 3 Fish Markets: In Sangli (Sangli Fish Market), Chandrapur (Chandrapur Fish Market), and Nagpur (Nagpur Fish market)
  • 1 International Fish Market: Modern wholesale international standard fish market in Mumbai Suburban (Marol Market)
  • Dredging of 13 Fish Landing Centres: Across Palghar (Dativare FLC and Vasai Creek), Thane (Dharavi/Uttan Dongri and Vashi Creek-Diwale Jetty), Ratnagiri (Ade Utambar, Dabhol, Mirya Bunder, Kalbadevi, and Rajiwada), Sindhudurg (Achara Creek and Tara-Mumbri), and Raigad (Agalechiwadi and Theronda)
  • 182 Artificial Reef Structures: Distributed across Thane (10 reefs), Palghar (37 reefs), Raigad (44 reefs), Ratnagiri (44 reefs), and Sindhudurg (47 reefs)
  • 2 Integrated Reservoir Development Projects: At Yavatmal (Arunavati Reservoir) and Pune (Dimbhe Reservoir)
