The Department of Fisheries, Government of India provided an update on the implementation of Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) projects in Karnataka, specifically focusing on the Mangaluru Fishing Harbour modernization. The department approved the modernization and upgradation of Mangaluru Fishing Harbour in 2024 at a total cost of ₹37.47 crore, with a central share contribution of ₹22.48 crore under the PMMSY scheme.
The project currently reports 25% physical progress with an expenditure of ₹6.31 crore. Upon completion scheduled for 21st May 2027, the harbor will provide berthing facilities for 1,600 fishing vessels and benefit approximately 18,000 fishers and associated stakeholders in the fisheries sector.
From 2023-24 to 2026-27, the Department of Fisheries has released ₹126.01 crore for fisheries development projects in Karnataka, which includes funding for fishing harbor infrastructure. Overall, under PMMSY, the department has approved various fisheries development projects in Karnataka totaling ₹1,053.60 crore from 2020-21 to 2026-27, all at various stages of implementation.
The Government of Karnataka reported that 212 beneficiaries across three coastal districts have been covered under beneficiary-oriented activities, including deep-sea fishing vessels, ice plants, cold storages, refrigerated vehicles, insulated vehicles, three-wheelers with ice boxes, and motorcycles with ice boxes. The PMMSY scheme addresses multiple infrastructure and operational requirements including modernization of fishing harbors and fish landing centers, cold chain infrastructure, hygienic fish handling facilities, transport and marketing infrastructure, quality fish seed production, institutional credit access through FIDF and KCC, aquatic animal health measures, insurance coverage promotion, and fisher capacity building.
