The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is proactively monitoring the monsoon situation across India and providing necessary support to affected States and Union Territories in managing challenges posed by heavy rains. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and guidance of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the ministry's Integrated Control Room (ICR-ER) works closely with central agencies including India Meteorological Department (IMD), Central Water Commission (CWC), and Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) to raise timely alerts to State and District Emergency Operation Centres.
During July 2026, the country faced heavy rains and landslides in multiple regions including Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Assam, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Dadar and Nagar Haveli, Daman, and Jammu & Kashmir. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) worked with State Government Agencies, state police, and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) on rescue and relief operations, with teams pre-positioned at vulnerable places to reduce response time. In the last week, NDRF teams rescued 52 civilians and evacuated 2,206 people to safer places across all affected States and Union Territories.
The Ministry of Defence also mobilized resources in coordination with MHA to save stranded people, assist rescue agencies in transportation, and distribute relief materials. Preparedness meetings were held, including one chaired by Home Minister Amit Shah on May 10, 2026, regarding pre-monsoon floods and heatwaves, and another on June 3, 2026, to review preparedness for heavy rain, cloudburst, floods, and landslides in Jammu and Kashmir.
Under directions of Home Minister Shah, Inter-Ministerial Central Teams visited affected areas of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam from July 7-10, 2026, to assess damage extent and provide necessary financial assistance from NDRF. Another team is scheduled to visit affected areas of Assam from July 25, 2026, to assess loss and damage caused by incessant rains and floods. Despite difficulties caused by recent rains, they have reduced the earlier predicted rain deficit from approximately 30% to about 15%.
