The Ministry of Heavy Industries provided a comprehensive update on India's electric vehicle adoption progress under various government schemes as of August 2026.
The FAME India Scheme Phase-II was implemented from April 1, 2019, to March 31, 2024, with total budgetary support of ₹11,500 crore, providing demand incentives for e-2Ws, e-3Ws, e-4Ws and grants for e-buses and EV public charging stations. The scheme supported the sale of approximately 16.72 lakh electric vehicles including e-2Ws, e-3Ws, and e-4Ws, while 5,299 electric buses were deployed as of July 31, 2026. Additionally, ₹912.50 crore was allocated for establishing EV public charging stations, resulting in 9,583 EV PCS installations.
The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Automobile and Auto Component Industry was notified on September 23, 2021, with a budgetary outlay of ₹25,938 crore to enhance India's manufacturing capabilities for Advanced Automotive Technology products including EVs. The PLI Scheme for National Programme on Advanced Chemistry Cell Battery Storage was notified on June 9, 2021, with ₹18,100 crore outlay aiming to establish domestic manufacturing ecosystem for 50 GWh of ACC batteries, of which 40 GWh has been awarded to four beneficiary firms.
The PM E-DRIVE Scheme was notified on September 29, 2024, with an outlay of ₹10,900 crore supporting incentivization of approximately 28.30 lakh electric vehicles including e-2W, e-3W, e-Trucks, e-buses and e-Ambulances. The scheme allocated ₹4,391 crore for deployment of 14,028 e-buses with 14,000 already allocated, and ₹2,000 crore for pan-India EV PCS deployment. The scheme also includes a Phased Manufacturing Programme mandating domestic manufacturing of EV components including battery packs.
The PM e-Bus Sewa-Payment Security Mechanism Scheme notified on October 28, 2024, has an outlay of ₹3,435.33 crore aiming to support over 38,000 electric buses by providing payment security to e-bus operators. As of July 10, 2026, the scheme covers 27,555 e-buses comprising 10,000 under MoHUA's PM-eBusSewa Scheme, 14,000 under MHI's PM E-DRIVE Scheme, and 3,555 under various State Government/STU initiatives.
Additional government initiatives include GST reduction to 5% on electric vehicles and chargers, green license plates with permit exemptions for battery-operated vehicles, and advisory to states to waive road tax on EVs.
Cumulative EV support numbers as of June 30, 2026, show FAME-I supported 2.80 lakh EVs, FAME-II supported 16.72 lakh EVs sold, PM E-DRIVE supported 26.59 lakh EVs sold, and PLI Auto & Auto Components supported approximately 21.30 lakh EVs sold up to March 31, 2026. As of August 7, 2026, India has 67,657 EV chargers installed across states and union territories, including 1,139 battery swapping station chargers.
