The Ministry of Heavy Industries has made an allocation of ₹2,000 crore under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme for deployment of Electric Vehicle Public Charging Stations (EVPCS) on a pan-India basis, including the state of Assam. However, Assam has not yet submitted any proposal for deployment of EVPCS under this scheme.
As of July 22, 2026, a total of 42,035 electric vehicles have been sold in Assam under the Scheme, including 8,003 EVs sold specifically in Cachar district. A total of 40,009 EVs have been incentivized in Assam with reimbursement of ₹99.10 crore to OEMs. The Ministry clarified that no State-wise allocation of funds has been made under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme, and no specific assessment has been conducted for Cachar district.
The Ministry is implementing multiple schemes to promote electric mobility across India. The FAME India Scheme Phase-II was implemented from April 1, 2019 to March 31, 2024 with total budgetary support of ₹11,500 crore, supporting the sale of approximately 16.72 lakh electric vehicles including e-2Ws, e-3Ws, and e-4Ws. The scheme also deployed 5,297 electric buses as of June 30, 2026, and allocated ₹912.50 crore for establishment of EVPCS across the country.
Additional schemes include the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Automobile and Auto Component Industry with budgetary outlay of ₹25,938 crore, notified on September 23, 2021, and the PLI Scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) Battery Storage with budgetary outlay of ₹18,100 crore, notified on June 9, 2021, aiming to establish domestic manufacturing ecosystem for 50 GWh of ACC batteries.
The PM EDRIVE Scheme with an outlay of ₹10,900 crore is being implemented from April 1, 2024, supporting incentivization of approximately 28.30 lakh electric vehicles including e-2W, e-3W, e-Trucks, e-buses and e-Ambulances. Under this scheme, ₹4,391 crore has been allocated for deployment of 14,028 e-buses, with 13,800 e-buses allocated in seven cities having four million plus population (Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune and Surat) and 200 e-buses approved for Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir.
The PM e-Bus Sewa-Payment Security Mechanism (PSM) Scheme, notified on October 28, 2024, has an outlay of ₹3,435.33 crore and aims to support deployment of more than 38,000 electric buses by providing payment security to e-bus operators in case of default by Public Transport Authorities.
Supplementary initiatives include reduction of GST on electric vehicles and chargers/charging stations to 5%, green license plates and permit exemptions for battery-operated vehicles by Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, and advisory to states to waive road tax on EVs to reduce initial costs.
