Ministry of Agriculture Kharif Crop Progress Report as on June 19, 2026

The Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare has released the progress of area coverage under Kharif crops as of June 19, 2026, showing a total sown area of 119.90 lakh hectares, representing an increase of 1.95 lakh hectares compared to the same period in 2025 when area stood at 117.95 lakh hectares.

Rice cultivation shows significant progress with 12.36 lakh hectares sown, substantially higher than the 8.09 lakh hectares covered during the same period last year, resulting in a net increase of 4.26 lakh hectares. The normal area for rice is 412.00 lakh hectares with final area coverage of 446.70 lakh hectares in 2025.

Pulses have shown moderate growth with 7.21 lakh hectares sown compared to 6.39 lakh hectares in 2025, representing an increase of 0.83 lakh hectares. Within pulses, moongbean shows the strongest performance with 4.08 lakh hectares sown versus 2.86 lakh hectares last year, an increase of 1.21 lakh hectares. Arhar recorded minimal growth with 1.61 lakh hectares (up 0.02 lakh hectares), while urdbean declined to 0.62 lakh hectares from 0.98 lakh hectares, a decrease of 0.36 lakh hectares.

Coarse cereals demonstrate robust growth with 12.43 lakh hectares sown, up 2.61 lakh hectares from 9.82 lakh hectares in 2025. Bajra leads this category with 4.05 lakh hectares sown compared to 2.14 lakh hectares last year, an impressive increase of 1.91 lakh hectares. Jowar shows growth of 0.34 lakh hectares to 1.74 lakh hectares, while maize increased by 0.35 lakh hectares to 5.69 lakh hectares.

Oilseeds overall show a decline with 7.24 lakh hectares sown versus 8.11 lakh hectares in 2025, a decrease of 0.87 lakh hectares. Groundnut shows marginal growth of 0.16 lakh hectares to 5.25 lakh hectares, while soybean shows a significant decline of 1.20 lakh hectares to 1.30 lakh hectares compared to 2.50 lakh hectares last year. Sunflower recorded growth of 0.21 lakh hectares to 0.49 lakh hectares.

Sugarcane shows stable performance with 57.31 lakh hectares sown, slightly higher than 56.64 lakh hectares in 2025, representing an increase of 0.67 lakh hectares. Jute & Mesta recorded 6.22 lakh hectares sown, up 0.14 lakh hectares from 6.09 lakh hectares last year.

Cotton shows the most significant decline among major crops with only 17.13 lakh hectares sown compared to 22.82 lakh hectares in 2025, representing a substantial decrease of 5.69 lakh hectares. The normal area for cotton is 125.51 lakh hectares with final area coverage of 115.20 lakh hectares in 2025.

The data includes methodological notes indicating that 'Other pulses' include Kulthi & Mothbean, and certain averages are based on 2022-23 & 2023-24 data for comparative purposes.
