The Ministry of Coal has opened applications for its Scheme for Promotion of Surface Coal/Lignite Gasification Projects, which was approved by the Government on May 13, 2026, with a total financial outlay of ₹37,500 crore. This major initiative aims to promote surface coal and lignite gasification projects to enhance value addition, reduce import dependence, and support India's vision of achieving greater self-reliance in the energy and chemical sectors.

Following the scheme's approval, the Ministry issued detailed Scheme Guidelines on June 25, 2026, and published the Request for Proposal (RFP) on July 7, 2026, inviting eligible applicants to submit proposals. To facilitate stakeholder participation and provide clarity on scheme provisions and the application process, the Ministry will hold a Pre-Application Conference on July 20, 2026, where prospective applicants and other stakeholders are encouraged to participate and submit queries for clarification.

The application submission deadline is set for September 7, 2026. All relevant documents including the Scheme Guidelines, Request for Proposal, and detailed Application Timeline are available on the Ministry of Coal website for interested entities to review.
