The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment published a case study titled "From Addiction to Recovery: Asha Ram's Journey Towards Renewed Hope and Social Reintegration" as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations. The document details the recovery journey of Mr. Ramesh Kumar (name changed), a 55-year-old Scheduled Caste resident of Mandla district, Madhya Pradesh, who faced long-term substance abuse challenges.
The individual received comprehensive support through the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR) at the Saidhantik Drug De-Addiction Center in Mandla, operated by Saidhantik Shiksha Samiti. Treatment began on May 7, 2026, and included free medical detoxification, individual counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), family therapy, rehabilitation activities, and safe shelter during recovery. The program addressed medical, psychological, emotional, and social dimensions of substance dependence.
The case study notes that the individual had experienced depression, social isolation, financial hardship, strained family relationships, and stigma associated with addiction prior to treatment. Through the program, he has shown improved physical and mental well-being, regained emotional stability and confidence, and experienced improved family relationships. Although he remains unemployed, the recovery process has helped him prepare for future livelihood opportunities and move toward social reintegration.
The document emphasizes the importance of accessible de-addiction services, professional counselling, family participation, and sustained rehabilitation in helping individuals overcome substance dependence.
