The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment published a success story showcasing the rehabilitation of a 28-year-old male from the Scheduled Caste community in Uttar Dinajpur district, West Bengal, who overcame addiction through government-supported intervention. The individual, identified only as Karan, had been experiencing significant personal and social difficulties including strained family relationships, social isolation, financial instability, and emotional stress despite being employed full-time.

Under the government rehabilitation scheme, Karan received comprehensive treatment at Bamoir Bishnupur Vivekananda Smriti Sangha, a DDAC (District Disability Rehabilitation Centre) in Uttar Dinajpur. The intervention included inpatient treatment, detoxification services, medication support, individual counselling, group counselling, family counselling, and art therapy. The holistic approach addressed both physical and psychological dimensions of addiction.

Continuous follow-up and after-care support were provided to strengthen recovery, prevent relapse, and encourage engagement in constructive activities. Family counselling specifically helped rebuild communication and trust within his family unit. The program included regular guidance to maintain focus on a healthy and productive lifestyle.

The rehabilitation has yielded positive outcomes: Karan is now engaged in regular labor work, contributing to improved financial stability and greater self-reliance. He is making conscious efforts to stay away from negative influences and unhealthy peer groups, demonstrating successful social reintegration. The individual expressed gratitude for the program, stating that rehabilitation support helped him rebuild his life and move toward a stable future.

The case study demonstrates the effectiveness of timely rehabilitation, counselling, family involvement, and sustained after-care in helping individuals overcome addiction and rebuild their lives. The progress reflects both personal determination and the value of holistic government rehabilitation services in supporting recovery, social reintegration, and economic self-reliance.
