The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment (MoSJE), as the nodal ministry for drug demand reduction, has launched the 'National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR)' and Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA) in 2020, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of creating a drug-free India. The initiatives employ a comprehensive framework focusing on prevention, awareness generation, capacity building, treatment, rehabilitation, and social reintegration.
Union Minister Dr. Virendra Kumar emphasized the need for collective action from all stakeholders including the general public, State/UT governments, line Ministries, and civil society, committing to a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach. The scale of the problem was quantified by the Ministry's first nationwide survey in 2019, which found that over 7 crore individuals were affected by substance use disorder, including nearly 1.2 crore children and 58 lakh women.
Secretary Shri Sudhansh Pant reported significant expansion of treatment infrastructure with 768 de-addiction and rehabilitation centres operational across the country. This has resulted in a remarkable 294% increase in persons seeking treatment, growing from 2.08 lakh in 2020 to over 8.20 lakh in 2025. The ministry's toll-free de-addiction helpline 14446 has received 4.69 lakh calls serving as the first point of contact for assistance seekers.
The NMBA App 2.0 supports States, Districts, spiritual organizations and other stakeholders in uploading field-based activities data with real-time visibility. Recently, the Nasha Mukt Bharat Saptah observed from 17-26 June 2026 at Dev Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya, Haridwar witnessed participation of more than 1.31 crore citizens through awareness generation and community mobilization activities including registration drives, seminars, webinars, training programs, street plays, competitions, e-pledges, rallies, and yoga sessions.
The Ministry calls upon all citizens, institutions, youth organizations, educational institutions, and community stakeholders to join this national movement through the pledge platform at https://nmba.dosje.gov.in/content/take-a-pledge and register as Nasha Mukti Mitr.
