The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying reported comprehensive initiatives to strengthen livestock development, improve dairy productivity, enhance animal health, and promote sustainable rural livelihoods across India through flagship schemes including the National Livestock Mission (NLM), Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund (AHIDF), Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM), and Livestock Health & Disease Control Programme (LHDCP).
In Assam, entrepreneurs received significant support with ₹4.98 crore subsidy released for 50 livestock projects over the last three years under NLM's Entrepreneurship Development Programme, including 23 pig breeding farms. Under AHIDF, ₹1.44 crore was released as interest subvention for eight projects, including one pig breeding farm. For genetic improvement, the government sanctioned ₹1.80 crore to establish a Pig Semen Collection and Processing Laboratory in Assam to promote artificial insemination, while 9,92,863 Classical Swine Fever vaccinations were administered free of cost in the state.
National dairy productivity showed substantial improvement, with average bovine milk productivity increasing from 1,648 kg per animal per year in 2014-15 to 2,251 kg in 2024-25, representing significant growth. National milk production increased by 70% from 146 million metric tonnes to 248 million metric tonnes over the same period.
Funding allocations for various programs during 2024-25 and 2025-26 included ₹41.67 crore under Rashtriya Gokul Mission for bovine genetic improvement, ₹124.29 crore under Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme, and ₹7.74 crore under National Livestock Mission for livestock development activities.
Fodder security initiatives achieved notable results, with ₹1,152.40 crore released over the last five years under NLM resulting in production of 1.6 lakh tonnes of quality fodder seed. The program supported 204 fodder-related projects under NLM-EDP, while AHIDF supported 174 animal feed plants with investments of ₹3,602.47 crore. Institutional support included 100 dedicated Fodder-Plus Farmer Producer Organisations established by National Dairy Development Board and ICAR-Indian Grassland and Fodder Research Institute developing high-yielding forage varieties and training over 10 lakh farmers.
The government also implemented heatwave management guidelines and promoted indigenous cattle breeds resilient to high temperatures, while providing digital advisory services through the 1962 Farmers App under Bharat Pashudhan for scientific ration balancing practices. For Andhra Pradesh, the Minister confirmed 100 percent Central assistance for vaccination against Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and Brucellosis under the National Animal Disease Control Programme.
