Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh, announced significant developments in India's livestock sector, highlighting expanded institutional credit access and production milestones. Credit accessibility reached a key milestone with Kisan Credit Card coverage scaling to 50.42 lakh beneficiaries in FY 2025–26, representing substantial growth from 15.08 lakh in 2021–22.
India's annual milk production reached 247.87 million tonnes in 2024–25, comfortably surpassing domestic demand of 243 million tonnes. Total dairy exports reached $407.18 million in FY 2025–26. The Ministry is actively expanding flagship schemes including the Rashtriya Gokul Mission for development and conservation of indigenous breeds and genetic upgradation of bovine population, and the National Livestock Mission to promote scientific breeding and improve fodder quality.
Under the National Livestock Mission's Entrepreneurial Development Programme, 50% capital subsidy is provided to individuals, Farmer Producer Organisations, Self-Help Groups, Joint Liability Groups, Farmer Cooperative Organisations, and Section 8 companies. The scheme focuses on Breed Development of Livestock & Poultry, Feed and Fodder development, Research & Development, Livestock Insurance and Extension.
For disease control, 100% financial assistance is provided under the Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme to all States/UTs for prevention of economically important livestock diseases including Foot and Mouth Disease, Brucellosis, Peste des Petits Ruminants and Classical Swine Fever through vaccination. Financial assistance is also provided on sharing basis for State-prioritized activities including vaccination against other diseases, control of emergent diseases, laboratory strengthening, disease surveillance, training and awareness.
Specifically in Tamil Nadu, financial assistance is provided on sharing basis for operation of 245 Mobile Veterinary Units to deliver veterinary services at farmers' doorsteps.
