The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment published a case study highlighting the impact of its National Overseas Scholarship Scheme through the journey of Ms. Yukti, a 26-year-old postgraduate from the Scheduled Caste community. The scheme provided crucial financial support during the 2023-2024 academic year, covering her tuition fees and providing an annual maintenance allowance of £9,900, which enabled her to pursue international education that would otherwise have been financially inaccessible.

Yukti faced significant barriers including caste-based discrimination, social exclusion, and persistent financial difficulties as her father, despite being educated, worked in a low-paying job with limited career progression due to occupational barriers and social bias. Despite these challenges, her parents prioritized education and she relied on government schools and public scholarships throughout her earlier studies.

The scholarship substantially eased the financial burden on Yukti and her family, allowing her to focus on studies and professional development. Although rising living costs abroad made expense management challenging, the assistance provided essential support throughout her educational journey. The selection also boosted her confidence and affirmed her academic potential in a competitive international environment.

Following her overseas education, Yukti gained valuable international exposure and advanced academic knowledge, which strengthened her professional prospects. She has since transitioned into India's private sector, securing professional opportunities and moving toward greater economic independence. While no specific change in income was reported, her educational achievements and entry into professional employment represent meaningful progress toward her aspirations.

The case study demonstrates the scheme's role in promoting educational inclusion for students from Scheduled Caste communities by providing financial assistance for tuition and maintenance, helping overcome economic barriers, broadening horizons, and building pathways toward professional growth. The experience illustrates how government support, family encouragement, and personal determination can combine to transform educational aspirations into tangible opportunities.
