Mission Mausam was launched by the Prime Minister on January 14, 2025, with the objective of making India a 'Weather-ready and Climate-smart' nation by strengthening Earth System observations and providing seamless weather and climate services. The mission aims to enhance weather and climate observations, understanding, modeling, and forecasting through cutting-edge technologies and systems.
Key objectives include developing advanced weather surveillance technologies, implementing higher-resolution atmospheric observations, deploying next-generation radars including 29 C-Band Doppler Weather Radars, 45 X-Band DWRs, and 12 S-Band DWRs, and installing 19 Wind Profiler Systems, 25 Microwave Radiometers, and 60 new GPS Radiosonde Stations. The India Meteorological Department currently operates 50 Doppler Weather Radars across the country in collaboration with MoES institutions and ISRO.
The mission has implemented global and regional Numerical Weather Prediction modeling systems including the global forecast systems of IMD and Mithuna modeling systems of NCMRWF, Noida, both running at 12 km resolution. The New Bharat Forecasting System operates at 6 km resolution to serve block and panchayat levels. Computational capabilities have been significantly enhanced with 'Arunika' and 'Arka' systems to support high-resolution modeling.
IMD has achieved a 40% improvement in forecast accuracy for severe weather events in recent decades compared to the previous decade. The department provides impact-based forecasts and risk-based warnings at district level for cyclones, heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, heatwaves, and cold waves.
Significant technological developments include the 'Mausamgram' platform providing hyperlocal weather forecasts down to village level with hourly forecasts for 36 hours, three-hourly for five days, and six-hourly for ten days. IMD has developed climate hazard and vulnerability maps at district level and geospatial services for weather forecasts. The department generates CAP alerts disseminated through SMS, SACHET app, and APIs used by Apple, Google, and GMAS.
For last-mile connectivity, IMD collaborates with the Ministry of Panchayati Raj through the Panchayat Mausam Seva Portal integrated with e-GramSwaraj, Meri Panchayat App, e-Manchitra, and Mausamgram. Mobile numbers of Panchayat Members, Ward Members, and Panchayat Secretaries are integrated for WhatsApp dissemination. IMD also leverages Krishi Sakhis and Pashu Sakhis networks of the Ministry of Rural Development.
The department has organized 7,300 Farmers' Awareness Programs across 373 districts, benefiting approximately 3.67 lakh farmers including those in 83 Aspirational Districts. Under Mission Mausam, IMD developed KALP for location-, crop- and crop-stage-specific advisories and Mausam SANKALP for weather analytics and climate-resilient agricultural planning.
