The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is implementing a New Solar Power Scheme under Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN) and Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan (DAJGUA) with 100% Central Financial Assistance. The scheme targets electrification of un-electrified households in Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTG) and tribal habitations/villages through off-grid solar systems where grid electricity is not techno-economically feasible.
The scheme has three components with specific financial allocations: provision of 0.3 kW solar off-grid systems for tribal and PVTG households at ₹50,000 per household or actual cost (whichever is lower); solar street lighting and lighting in Multi-Purpose Centres (MPCs) of PVTG areas at ₹1 lakh per MPC (under PM-JANMAN only); and solarisation of public institutions through off-grid systems at ₹1 lakh per kW with maximum capacity of 20 kW per institution (under DAJGUA only).
As of June 30, 2026, central financial assistance of ₹57.10 crore has been released under the scheme. The program aims to cover electrification of one lakh un-electrified households in tribal and PVTG areas identified by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, plus solarisation of 1,500 Multi-Purpose Centres in PVTG areas. Currently, 11,838 households have been electrified through solar off-grid systems across different states.
Separately, the Ministry of Power supports states for grid electrification of un-electrified households under the Revamped Distribution Sector Schemes (RDSS). Under this scheme, works amounting to ₹521.45 crore with gross budgetary support of ₹331.49 crore have been sanctioned in 13 states for providing grid connectivity to 139,126 PVTG households. As of July 24, 2026, 138,620 PVTG households have been electrified through grid connections.
The government clarified that no subsidy is being provided to small shopkeepers/commercial premises operators for installing solar panels on commercial establishments, and no such proposal for considering new subsidy schemes for small businessmen in tribal regions is under consideration.
