Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi visited the UNESCO World Heritage Prambanan Temple Complex in Yogyakarta, Indonesia on July 8, 2026, accompanied by Indonesian President H.E. Mr. Prabowo Subianto. The two leaders jointly unveiled a plaque marking the commencement of the Archaeological Survey of India's (ASI) conservation and restoration project at the temple complex.
The Prambanan Temple Complex, built in the 9th century, represents the largest temple complex in Indonesia and is dedicated to the Trimurti—Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. The complex serves as an enduring symbol of the shared civilizational and cultural heritage between India and Indonesia.
This conservation initiative follows understanding reached between the two leaders during President Prabowo's State Visit to India in 2025, where they agreed to explore India's assistance for restoring temples at the Prambanan complex. India brings significant expertise to this project, having successfully completed heritage restoration and conservation work at several World Heritage Sites across Southeast Asia. The ASI has previously conducted extensive documentation of the Borobodur Temple Compounds in Indonesia, demonstrating the country's commitment to preserving shared civilizational heritage in the region.
