Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs Approves 2.13 Lakh Additional Houses under PMAY-U 2.0

The Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has sanctioned 2,13,602 additional houses for eligible urban poor families under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban 2.0 (PMAY-U 2.0) scheme. This approval was granted during the 7th meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC) chaired by Shri Srinivas Katikithala, Secretary of MoHUA, at Sankalp Bhawan in New Delhi on June 17, 2026.

The latest sanctions have increased the total number of houses approved under PMAY-U 2.0 to 16.13 lakh, accelerating affordable housing delivery with basic amenities across the country. The houses were sanctioned across 16 states: Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Odisha, Rajasthan, Telangana, Tripura, and Uttar Pradesh.

Breakdown by Construction Vertical

The 2.13 lakh houses were distributed across different construction verticals: 1.89 lakh houses under Beneficiary Led Construction (BLC) and 23,602 houses under Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP). In Gujarat, Odisha, and Madhya Pradesh, houses were sanctioned under both BLC and AHP verticals, providing beneficiaries flexibility to either construct on their own land or purchase affordable dwelling units in sanctioned projects.

Beneficiary Demographics and Social Inclusion

The scheme demonstrates strong emphasis on social inclusion and women empowerment. In the latest sanctions, 2.05 lakh houses (96% of the total) have been allotted to women, including widows, separated, or unmarried females. Additionally, 22 houses were sanctioned for transgenders and 25,035 houses for senior citizens.

The scheme specifically prioritizes marginalized communities with 34,257 houses allocated to Scheduled Caste beneficiaries, 22,516 to Scheduled Tribe beneficiaries, and 87,077 to Other Backward Classes beneficiaries.

Overall Scheme Performance and Historical Context

Since the launch of PMAY-U in 2015, the program has played a transformative role in addressing India's affordable housing gap. Under both PMAY-U and PMAY-U 2.0 combined, 1.27 crore houses have been sanctioned, with 1.20 crore houses grounded for construction and 98.60 lakh houses completed and delivered to beneficiaries.

PMAY-U 2.0 aims to support the housing needs of an additional 1 crore EWS/LIG/MIG families in urban India, providing government support of up to ₹2.5 lakh per beneficiary for constructing, purchasing, or renting affordable housing. The scheme maintains a strong focus on women-led house ownership or joint ownership, with 97% of all 16.13 lakh sanctioned houses under PMAY-U 2.0 allotted to women.

Committee Review and Future Focus

During the CSMC meeting, the committee reviewed PMAY-U 2.0 progress and discussed measures to accelerate grounding of sanctioned houses, improve project monitoring, and prioritize housing projects near mass transit corridors for better connectivity and quality of life for beneficiaries.
