The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has approved 29,000 additional houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana - Urban 2.0 (PMAY-U 2.0) scheme, bringing the total number of houses sanctioned under this phase to 18.77 lakh. This decision was taken during the 9th meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC) held on September 10, 2026, chaired by Secretary of Urban Development Satendra Singh.
The newly approved houses fall under the Beneficiary Led Construction (BLC) and Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP) verticals and cover six states: Assam, Bihar, Gujarat, Telangana, Tripura, and Uttar Pradesh. The scheme targets eligible urban EWS/LIG and MIG families with annual household income up to ₹9 lakh, providing various housing solutions including construction assistance, project purchases, rental housing, and interest subsidy on housing loans.
A significant emphasis is placed on women's ownership, with 17.19 lakh houses (92% of total sanctioned) allotted to women, either solely or through joint ownership. The scheme also demonstrates strong inclusivity with 1.80 lakh houses allotted to senior citizens, 3.25 lakh houses for SC beneficiaries, 1.02 lakh for ST beneficiaries, and 8.22 lakh for OBC beneficiaries.
Cumulatively, under both PMAY-U and PMAY-U 2.0, more than 1.25 crore houses have been sanctioned nationwide, with over 1 crore houses completed and delivered to beneficiaries. Secretary Singh announced that CSMC meetings will now be convened every second week of the month to ensure regular monitoring and accelerate implementation progress, with states/UTs required to submit duly approved projects by the end of each month for consideration in subsequent meetings.
